Strategy with Kristy: John Kim Part Two
February 03 2012, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy: John Kim Part One Strategy with Kristy: Jared Tendler on the Mental Game of Poker Part 2 Strategy with Kristy: Jared Tendler on the Mental Game of Poker Pt 1 Share It Tags Poker Players, Poker Strategy, PokerNews Strategy, PokerNews Podcast Print John Kim is back for another edition of the Strategy with Kristy podcast. Last week, he talked about what it takes to be a professional poker player. This week, Kim talks about interesting hands he’s played recently and also discusses a couple of hands he watched his students played. Here is a snippet from the interview: Let me tell you a really quick story about why you want to take your time making decisions. In the 2006 [World Series of Poker] Main Event, the year Jamie Gold won it, I ran pretty good and made it to Day 5. We were down to 73 players. I had 30 big blinds or something close. Everyone folded to me in the small blind. I had jack-ten offsuit. I limped or raised, my action doesn’t really matter, but he looked over at my stack and contemplated raising. Obviously, he has a pretty good hand if he’s thinking about raising preflop. He was just a standard player, nothing out of line. The flop came ten-two-four rainbow. I just remember thinking, “OK, I have top pair. I have 30 big blinds. I guess I have to go broke.” That’s obviously the wrong way of thinking. I think I bet, he raised, I three-bet, he shoved, and I snap-called without even thinking. He rolled over king-ten, and I busted in 73rd. It’s the worst feeling when you bust after playing five days in the Main Event. When I walked away, I was just thinking, “Man, why did I do that?” If I thought about it, I could have avoided going broke there. I knew he wanted to raise preflop, so if he’s raising my bet on the flop, he always has ace-ten or king-ten. I should have taken my time and thought about that. Here’s the other thing. I finished 73rd, but the two guys who finished 72nd and 71st are right behind me. My payout was, $65,000 or something like that, and 72nd paid a little over $100,000. Literally, if I would have just thought about it for three seconds, I would have made an extra $30,000. So ever since then, I told myself that I would never act in haste. Always think every decision through. Podcast Powered By Podbean Tune in every week for new episodes of Strategy with Kristy.

Wikipedia Blackout
Poker Legal Issues, Seizure of Poker Domains January 18th, 2012 How will the Wikipedia Blackout effect poker and poker sites in general? Its a possibility that poker blogs, poker strategy, and sits that contain poker bios will receive an influx of traffic because of the Wikipedia Blackout. Poker fans will be Googling poker pros like they normally do but will not find the content on Wikipedia as they normally would. Wikipedia ranks one or page one for many poker bios and poker terms in general. When fans cannot get the info, they may go down to the next site, thus increasing the traffic. Google ranks Wikipedia high for many terms because of the links coming in and the fact that there are no ads. Google loves when sites dont have advertising unless they are google ads of course. The US government has in a sense already blacked out poker from the internet. On April 16th, the DOJ seized the domain names of several leading poker sites who do not even operate from the USA. They did this based on laws that were passed in the middle of the night and attached to a port security bill and that did not even apply to online poker. Im happy that Google and Wikipedia oppose the blackout, although I would like to ad that Google has acted just how these movie and record companies act. They limit the growth of the internet by punishing sites who use alternatives to Google. They have a monopoly on search of the internet (as every webmaster knows by looking at their stats). To conclude Id like to say that I applaud the efforts of Wikipedia and suggest a blackout of Google if they continue their monopolistic practices.

The Russian online poker community
1 February 2009 Betfair announced in a Wednesday press release that it has opened its online client to the Russian poker community. On Wednesday Betfair, which boasts of the world’s biggest sports betting exchange, opened it doors to the Russian online poker community. With the emergence of a myriad of Russian pros on tour, the Eurasian nation has become a hotbed for new poker talent.”Up until now, the clients could only view information on the poker client and promotions in English, Spanish, German, and Italian, ” said Bruce Stubbs Head of Betfair Poker. ”However, we are delighted to start offering updated information to our Russian clients.”As of yet Team Betfair doesn’t boast of any Russians, Team PokerStars Pro already had a couple from the Russian Federation in the stable; 2008 Aussie Millions winner Alex Kostritsyn and WSOP bracelet winner and 2007 final tabler Alex Kravchenko. This year, PokerStars added powerhouse Ivan Demidov, who became the first player to make both the WSOP and WSOPE Main Event final tables, finishing in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Fellow Russian Stanislav Alekhin joined Demidov at the WSOPE final table, finishing as runner-up. The WSOPE was sponsored by Betfair.Full Tilt also has a couple red pros from Russia. Nikolay Evdakov burst onto the scene in 2008, setting a record at the WSOP with 10 cashes for the series. Breaking Humberto Brenes and Phil Hellmuth’s cashing record earned him a deal with Full Tilt. The WSOP women’s champ also plays on Full Tilt. Svetlana Gromenkova moved from Moscow to the U.S in 2002, went pro in 2005 and claimed her first bracelet in 2008, when she captured the Ladies Event title.”The Russian market is a fascinating one and one that continues to produced very talented individuals,” continued Stubbs. ”We saw a very strong showing from this region at this year’s WSOP Europe event which we currently sponsor. We hope that the new Russian client shows our commitment to developing and producing new offerings and hope to announce more in the coming year.”The Betfair announcement comes less than two months after PokerStars announced the formation of the Russian Poker Tour (RPT) The RPT just kicked off their inaugural event in St. Petersburg, a $5,000 that will wrap on Feb 1st. After St. Petersburg, it’s off to the $10K event in Moscow Feb.22-28. OPN Staff All trademarks and copyrighted information contained herein are the property of their respective owners.

For this edition of Strategy with Kristy, brought to you by South Point, Watson discusses the strategy behind playing a big stack in a no-limit hold’em tournament. Here is a snippet from the interview: If you’re at a table with a player who’s good and has a big stack, how do you combat them? I mean, it’s a very difficult situation obviously. That’s the nightmare scenario in a tournament. Ideally you have position on them, but if you’re out of position, sometimes you have to tighten up a little bit. You might open-fold some of the speculative hands you’d usually try to pick up some chips with. If they’re going to give you trouble and three-bet you a lot, there’s not much you can do. All you can do is come up with a balanced strategy against them. You’re going to have to four-bet as a bluff sometimes. If they’re really over-aggressive, you might be looking to four-bet light for value hoping to induce them to spew. Sometimes, you can even take flops against them even though you’re out of position and try to outplay them postflop. They might be less comfortable in a postflop game. Players have to learn how to adapt, and for those who came up when no one was really playing that aggressive preflop, learning to four-bet as a bluff can be scary. I think it’s hard for players to integrate these types of plays into their game. Yeah definitely. I used to always be a very tight player, I think most people would say. That’s definitely stuff I used to be uncomfortable putting into my own game. Once you look at the game and break it down to a more theoretical level, you realize you just have to do stuff like that. These are plays that just have to be in your arsenal because it’s the only way to effectively combat the increased aggression of other players.
